Indigeneity in Europe: Issues and Perspectives
The Place Wisdom Working Group (PWWG) of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore are preparing an exciting scoping workshop this July to bring members of the group together with one another and with others representing diverse institutions, expertise, and knowledges, to share and develop understandings of indigeneity in the European context.
The event, which is a collaboration between the PWWG, UHI’s Institute for Northern Studies, and Learning for Sustainability Scotland, is planned to take place at UHI Perth on 28 July 2022, with linked events on the evening before and the morning after. The plan is for an on-site workshop that will allow for social contact and outdoor activities.
Johan Sandberg McGuinne (https://johansandbergmcguinne.wordpress.com/about/), Indigenous knowledge and tradition bearer of the South Sámi in Sweden and a Scottish Gaelic translator, teacher, poet and academic, has been invited to give a keynote sharing Indigenous methodologies; including creative engagement with the living traditions of Place Wisdom. This is scheduled as a public evening event on 27 July 2022.
We are inviting contributions (short field reports, thought-pieces, provocations, or other interventions) that will stimulate exploration and debate under four broad themes:
- Lands, peoples and languages
- Living from the land
- Spiritual knowledge
- Intercultural / intergenerational issues
If you are interested in participating, please contact ullrich.kockel@uhi.ac.uk as soon as possible.
There is no attendance fee. Catering outlets are available near the workshop venue. A number of reasonably priced en-suite rooms have been reserved for participants who need overnight accommodation on 27 and/or 28 July. If you would like to make use of this, please register your interest via the above email address.
