Our first Critical Sustainability Conversation: ‘Mapping the Terrain around the SDGs’

Tue 13th May 2025 - Courses & Events Summaries, Sustainable Development Goals

The pursuit of sustainable futures is complex, requiring deliberation of contested concepts, navigation of moral and practical challenges, and consideration of unpredictability. Learning for sustainability should thus support and enable dialogue; as well as the acquisition of specific skills, knowledge and competencies.

We were delighted to recently host the first of our new series of ‘Critical Sustainability Conversations’, which seek to provide spaces for the ambitions outlined above.

What was this Conversation about?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have now been in place for a decade, with only five years left to go until we reach their target date of 2030. Conversation is intensifying on how far we have come, potential avenues for collaboration – and where we go from here.

This webinar highlighted positive possibilities for individuals, organisations and nations to work together through the SDGs.

We mapped the future terrain of the SDGs in Scotland; exploring the current ‘hot topics’ in relation to the SDGs, considering who is involved so far, and investigating how we can work together. This is an exciting time, as Scotland’s SDG Network is galvanising further action through a revamped Basecamp site for active collaboration, a brand new landing page and an open LinkedIn presence to widen the conversation.

We also shared the results of a new map illustrating ongoing work in Scotland – and participants were provided with the opportunity to put themselves ‘on the map’ too! This new resource is available to all – read on to find out more.
