Why Not Scotland? Film screening and discussion on rewilding our nation.
Why Not Scotland? is a feature-length documentary, which forms a central part of the Rewilding Nation campaign.

The film accompanies Flo, a young Scot from Glasgow, on an intensely personal journey, as she seeks out examples of nature recovery around Europe. Like many of her generation, Flo is concerned by the state of nature and fearful about an uncertain future. However, during her travels, she discovers places where nature is making a spectacular comeback, breathing life back into the landscape and revitalising human communities.
Encouraged by these stories of hope and renewal, she is prompted to wonder: Why Not Scotland?
On Monday 14 April, 40 participants joined us, the 2050 Climate Group, and our Youth Co-Ordinator, Alyson, at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute for an in-person screening of this film and an informal discussion; where we asked ourselves – ‘Why not Scotland?’
After viewing the thought-provoking film, participants engaged in small-group discussions.
Conversations around the possibilities, opportunities, challenges – and tensions – of rewilding in Scotland ensued: with participants considering its potential impact from multiple perspectives; including real-life anecdotes around the ways in which rewilding affects people, as well as places. Issues around political decisions, questions of who ‘owns the narrative’, and how we ensure that all voices are heard, were also discussed.
Our warmest thanks goes to Alyson for organising this wonderful event, to the Climate 2050 Group alumni who assisted her, and to the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute for the use of their fantastic venue.
