Open Ground specialises in place-based education and research.
The key aim of this approach is to enable students, educators and organisations to better understand their relationships to the places they live and work in.
These experiences contribute to a ‘sense of place’ which can impact on sustainability of the land and community, sense of pride and responsibility for the locality and increased mental, physical and ecological well-being.
Open Ground fulfills these aims through various strategies. The principle approach being to work with schools to develop their ability to use the locality as a classroom, to learn ‘in, about and for’ that place, involving the community and the local environment.
Training courses and teacher training workshops encourage development and understanding of these techniques. Open Ground also undertakes participative research to help organisations respond to their context and locality.
