Attending the 11th Global RCE Conference in Cebu, Philippines

Mon 7th January 2019 - RCE Network

Laura Curtis-Moss (member of the LfS Scotland Steering Group) and Kirsten Leask (co-vice Chair of LfS Scotland) attended the 11th Global RCE Conference on behalf of LfS Scotland. Here Laura tells us about the experience.

Last month I was lucky enough to travel to the Philippines to represent Learning for Sustainability Scotland at the 11th Global RCE Conference held at the University of the Philippines Cebu.

It was incredibly exciting to meet people from all over the world, working on different aspects of education for sustainable development and focusing on the crucial role of education as the foundation of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

As well as local and international speakers (in keeping with SDG 5 – Gender Equality – the majority of whom were women) there was plenty of opportunities to hear diverse case studies from peers – ranging from local grassroots projects to ambitious national undertakings to out of the box methods of reaching new audiences (the RCE Greater Portland podcast).

I shared a case-study about a project supported by the Learning for Sustainability Scotland Youth Network earlier last year as well as the food landscape in Scotland and the Good Food Nation Campaign.

Kirsten Leask delivered a brilliant hands-on workshop ‘Food for Thought’ exploring how to use food as a context for engaging learners, this was hugely popular with participants.

My highlights from the trip were meeting fellow youth co-ordinators in person as well as the Aloguisan eco-river tour. I left with renewed energy and inspiration for 2019 (despite being fairly jet-lagged).
